I’m learning Sicilian because I’m going to write a book about us. Archaeology. DNA. Etc. And I’m writing it in Sicilian because I want it to be for us, first. Spoiler alert: we’re the Minoans! sono siciliana, ma purtroppo non ho mai imparato il "dialetto" ; lo capisco quando non è molto stretto e quando è la variante palermitana (sono di palermo); oggi vivo in spagna da ormai 2 anni, studio francese e arabo; malgrado mi definisca "poliglotta" è una tristezza non conoscere la lingua della mia terra. Ed è un peccato non averla imparata mentre vivevo lí perché è difficile poterla imparare da adulta e da lontano!

Lots of doubters in the comments, but I just want to say that the need for a shared written language as a precursor to the language being used in schools or in any official capacity is obvious. A written language is not necessarily tied to pronunciation; writing shouldn't always be a straight transcription of speech (especially when audio recording is so easy and accessible). Instead, it should balance etymology and phonology, link back to classical literature (which, in Sicilian, is plentiful), and allow a fair amount of heterogeneity. In other words, the written language should serve as a sort of matrix which each individual dialect or writer can "plug into". And I think the vision you expressed in this video clearly shows that! So thank you for your language preservation efforts and kudos.

Io sono siciliana, nata in Sicilia, vivo in Sicilia, oltre al siciliano parlo italiano, inglese, tedesco e francese. Non sono ignorante. È semplicemente la mia lingua madre. I Siciliani devono essere considerati a pieno titolo bilingue!
